A little more on Easter Island
Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) is most recognised for its statues with large alien-like heads called Moai. The statues were carved from the soft tuff rock of the volcano and transported to the sacred sites (or ahus) where they would stand in rows with their backs to the sea. The average Moai is 4m (13.29ft) tall and weighs around 13 tonnes.
Due to a series of catastrophic events in the 1800s, 97% of the islands population were wiped out. As there are no written records of the society or their statues, little is really known about their significance. Fortunately, two-thirds of the statues were left incomplete at various stages of their creation, providing some insight to how they were built.
