A little more on the Great Wall
The Great Wall spans from Shanhaiguan on the Yellow Sea in the east to Jiayuguan in the Gobi desert. It began as a series of walls in the 5th Century BC when China was divided into 7 states, each state building it’s own wall. The Qin dynasty saw the China states united and the first Emperor used upto a million workers to unify them.
The wall had over 10 000 towers, which were built during the Ming dynasty to house goods and provide shelter. The wall was used to not only keep the northern enemies out but also to keep people in. It was an excellent way to transport goods, military and equipment, and beacons were used to create smoke signals to track the status of enemy units. Today the wall is only used for tourism purposes.
