A little more on the Tikal
Tikal, known for it’s temples towering above the jungle canopy, was founded in 400 BC and rose to greatness in 200-850 AD, where it became one of the largest and most important Mayan cities. Reaching a peak population of around 100 000 in approximately 500 AD. Its decline was swift, and the city was abandoned around the same time as the overall collapse of the Mayan Empire in 900 AD. While there are many theories offering explanations for the collapse, there are none that have been universally accepted.
The dense jungle location provides a spectacular setting for this Ancient city. In the 16 square kilometers that have been mapped, there are around 3000 structures, majority of which are in the form of green ‘hills’ still waiting to be revealed. This site is great for wildlife spotting; brightly coloured toucans and parrots, as well as the howler monkeys can been seen (and if not, certainly heard!).
One of the best features of Tikal is that no matter how busy it is, because the park is so big, it is still possible to enjoy a piece of Mayan architecture on your own, without the distraction of other tourists.
